CES Day 2
January 10th, 2009 by Chris ForsbergCES is definitely an amazing show, but on Friday we thought it would be fun to have a field trip. So we jumped in the car and headed out to see the Hoover Dam. I’ve never seen it, and the other guys have only driven over it many years ago.
Coming in over the hill you can see Lake Mead.
Before we even saw the dam, we saw this amazing bridge being constructed. I’m guessing it will be around 1000 feet from the road surface to the river.
This is the view of it from the dam. It’s a bypass road for less traffic over the dam itself.
And here’s the dam, I couldn’t even fit the whole thing in one pic! It is 726 feet high, and at the base it is as thick as it is tall!
Pic of the power plant way down below.
I was really hoping to see some transformers on the tour. But that area must have been off limits.
This is one of the four 50 some foot wide tunnels that was built to divert the water around the dam site while it was built. And now they are what connects the lakeside to the generators.
Sorry for the crappy pic but its the only one of I took of this. These are 4 of the 16 generators in the plant. They are enormous. See that lil red one halfway in the ground at the bottom right? That is one of the generators that separately power the entire dam site!
Even I got my hand on running my own mini power plant.
