Sightseeing around England

We arrived to the UK a few days early so that we could do a little sightseeing throughout the country in the smaller towns and villages that we have never been to before. When we landed, our good friends Angie and Ian met us at the airport and went with us to pick up our car. We rented a Renault and I chauffeured us all around to get comfortable with RHD for the weekend.

Our first stop was in Oxford, we walked through the town and checked out one of their castles, and then we went for a walk through their nature parks. We stayed the night in a student housing hall that becomes a Bed and Breakfast during the summer.

We arrive at Stone on the Wold and looked at some of the old shops and inn’s. This inn was dated back to 947!

Then we hit some backroads towards Slaughters. We were starting to get real deep into the country now.

This town even had a river ford in it!

Some country side shots on the way out of town.

Our next stop was Bourton on the Water, another small town within Cotswold. We noticed that there was a “Motor Museum” in town so we stopped in to see what they had. This place was jam packed with tons of cars and memorabilia dating back to the ‘20s.

They even had James Hunt’s last F1 car that he ever raced on display.

We found a garden maze as we were leaving town, never been in one of those before!

We then headed out to Stratford, the birthplace of Shakespeare. We noticed that inside some of the buildings they had beams and rooflines less than six feet!

I don’t know how some of these buildings are still standing.

The birthplace of William Shakespeare, where we took a tour through the museum and learned more about his life and also what life was like in the 1600’s in general.

We then took a row boat out on the river, I sat back and relaxed while Michelle did all the hard work… just kidding… we all took a turn.

We then found ourselves in Cambridge, the most known piece of history for this city was that this was where Isaac Newton discovered the laws of gravity.

After a short stroll through the city we went punting around the canal. I found out that punting is much more difficult than it looks but by the end, I think I could punt alongside the pros.

We brought some bread to feed the ducks while we were cruising around…

Then some swans showed up and we got a little nervous, they are much more intimidating when they are at eye level and hissing at you!

Next stop… Silverstone!

Looks like a blast! I have been to Oxford and Cambridge twice, some familiar sites. It’s amazing how rich the history is there, so many buildings have been unchanged for hundreds of years!
